Over 169,000 Displaced in Yemen Amid Escalating Conflict in Taiz and Western Coast

The Executive Unit for the Management of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in Yemen has reported that 169,074 individuals from 25,116 families have been forced to flee their homes due to intensified military escalation, shelling, and deteriorating security conditions as of September 21.

Taiz Governorate has recorded the highest influx of displaced persons, hosting 12,610 families—totaling approximately 88,324 individuals—spread across 15 districts. Lahj followed as the second-largest destination with 5,625 families, while the interim capital, Aden, received 3,114 families. Officials noted that field monitoring teams continue to face significant challenges in achieving a comprehensive census of the displaced population.

The displacement data further indicates that 1,562 families fled to Abyan, while 1,471 families sought refuge in Al-Hudaydah. Additional secondary displacement movements were recorded toward Aden, with the remaining families dispersed across the governorates of Ma'rib, Hadramout, Al-Mahra, Al-Dhale'e, and Shabwa at varying rates.

The Executive Unit emphasized that the vast majority of these families were compelled to flee abruptly, arriving without access to essential food, shelter, or medical care. The agency warned of a widening humanitarian assistance gap in the affected areas and issued an urgent appeal to United Nations agencies and international donors for immediate emergency intervention to address the critical needs of the displaced population.
