Measles Outbreak in Marib: 1,500 Cases, 10 Deaths This Year

Official statistics reveal that the province of Marib in eastern Yemen has recorded approximately 1,500 cases and 10 fatalities due to measles since the beginning of the current year.

During a meeting held on Wednesday to discuss the epidemiological situation in the governorate, the Marib Health Office reported that 1,494 suspected cases of measles have been identified since the start of 2024. Of these, 264 cases have been confirmed through laboratory testing, with 10 deaths attributed to the virus.

The meeting concluded with recommendations to intensify epidemiological surveillance and rapid response efforts. These include reaching children who have missed their vaccinations, implementing community awareness campaigns to highlight the importance of immunization, and encouraging increased participation in vaccination programs to curb the spread of the disease and protect children from its complications.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, Marib has been one of the most affected governorates among Yemen's liberated areas regarding measles. Last year, the province registered 2,380 measles cases and 22 related deaths.
